In Jamaica, urban sprawl is a significant issue that results in the loss of agricultural fields, the degradation of natural ecosystems, and worsened traffic congestion. Lack of proper urban planning and land-use rules has led unplanned growth and the encroachment of urban areas on rural lands, as well as inadequate infrastructure and services.
Jamaica's long-term development is significantly impacted by urban growth, especially in the tourist sector. Over 30% of GDP is attributed to tourism, which relies heavily on the country's natural environment and cultural legacy. Urban development poses a danger to these assets, leading to environmental deterioration and harming the reputation and brand image of the tourist sector.

Urban development is a major contributor to climate change, resulting in increased greenhouse gas emissions, soil deterioration, and deforestation, which can lead to the loss of natural ecosystems. Jamaica pledged to cut its greenhouse gas emissions by 25% by 2030. The nation's Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) includes strategies to accomplish this objective, such as encouraging sustainable land-use methods and expanding the use of renewable energy. The degradation of natural habitats and rising greenhouse gas emissions caused by urban development make Jamaica's NDC difficult to achieve. For Jamaica to fulfill its obligations under the Paris Agreement, the issue of urban sprawl must be addressed.
The System's Thinking Approach involves understanding the interrelationships between different elements of the system and addressing the root causes of the problem. This could involve developing effective urban planning and land-use policies that prioritize sustainable development and protect natural habitats and agricultural lands. Investments in sustainable tourism infrastructure and public transit could also reduce traffic congestion and environmental damage while generating economic advantages. The public's understanding of the value of sustainable development and the negative effects of urban expansion could also influence behavior and encourage more sustainable practices.
