Overfishing in Jamaica’s Fishing Industry - by Mr. Donavan Davy

Writer's picture: Donovan DavyDonovan Davy

Overfishing in Jamaica denotes unsustainable fishing practices that have been carried out in Jamaican waters, leading to a significant decline in fish populations and negatively impacting marine ecosystems. Overfishing in Jamaica gives rise to: Unsustainable fishing methods, Overexploitation of key fish species, Lack of effective fisheries management, Destruction of marine habitats, Socioeconomic impacts, Environmental degradation.

As such, overfishing in Jamaica has been driven by these factors and urgent measures are needed to address them while raising awareness about the importance of sustainable fishing practices for the long-term health and resilience of Jamaica's marine resources.

Threat to food security - Overfishing is a threat to fish-dependent local communities in Jamaica, resulting in declining fish populations, fewer catches, and higher prices. This can have a negative impact on social and health conditions, particularly for vulnerable populations. This is especially true in coastal communities where fish is a common food.

Overfishing in Jamaica has significant impacts on biodiversity loss in marine ecosystems. With regards to the Disruption of ecosystem functions; Overfishing can disrupt marine ecosystem functions by reducing the abundance and diversity of fish species, leading to imbalances and decreased resilience.

With regards to Blue economy and sustainable development, Jamaica's NDC recognizes the importance of promoting sustainable economic development, including the "blue economy". Overfishing can threaten the long-term viability of the blue economy, so Jamaica should adopt sustainable fishing practices and ensure the long-term health of fish stocks to promote the sustainable development of its blue economy.

Systems Thinking is a holistic approach that speaks to interpret the interconnectedness and dynamics of complex systems, such as the fishing industry, to achieve sustainability. To tackle these challenges and achieve strong sustainability, the fishing industry would need to adopt to:

ü Understanding the root causes

ü Identifying leverage points

ü Promoting sustainable fishing practices

ü Enhancing food security

ü Conserving marine habitats

ü Engaging stakeholders

ü Monitoring and adaptive management

ü Education and awareness
